WEEKEND EVENTS: Additional Happenings In The SBC

There's so much going on in the SBC this WEEKEND that I thought it best to ADD more events to my weekly list ....

FRIDAY:


8 am: Celebrating Seniors @ Southern Hills Community Center

SPAR in association with Fit for Life Inc. will celebrate seniors with a health fair aerobics, beanbag baseball, table games tournaments, line dancing and more for the senior citizens. Call (318) 673-7845 for more information.




9:30 am -- AARP Driver Safety Program @ Hollywood/Union Ave. Library

The class is a refresher course and is open to drivers 50 years of age and older. Participants must attend both days, May 7-8. Cost is $12, AARP members; $14, non-AARP members. Pre-registration required. The library is located at 2105 Hollywood Ave. Call (318) 865-2667 for more information.




6 pm: Caddo Magnet High Fine Arts Show Opening @ Meadows Museum of Art

The exhibit is a culmination of the 2008-09 school year and includes paintings, drawings, printmaking, mixed media and ceramics. There will be a performance by the Caddo Magnet Jazz Band under the direction of Joe LeBlanc, food will be provided. The artwork will be on display through May 22. The museum is located at 2911 Centenary Blvd. This event is free.






SATURDAY:


8 am: Clean Up Neighborhood Saturday @ Highland Center

The Highland Restoration Association neighborhood organization is inviting Highland residents to join in picking up litter throughout the neighborhood streets. Volunteers should meet in the parking lot across from the Highland Center. The HC is located at 520 Olive St.



8 am: SPAR's Annual Hershey Track and Field Competition @ Northwood High School

Track events will include four dash events and a 4 x 100 meter relay, field events will include a standing long jump and softball throw. Each child may enter either two track and one field event or one track and two field events. The competition is open to boys and girls born between 1995 and 2002. This event is free. NHS is located at 5939 Old Mooringsport Road in Shreveport.

8:30 am -- Family Fitness Day in the Park @ Betty Virginia Park

"Family Walk," "Diaper Derby" and "Tots on Trikes" races. The Family Walk is open to all family members and will take in the sights of the Highland Neighborhood. The Diaper Derby race is open to babies 9 to 12 months who cannot walk. The Tots on Trikes race is open to children between the ages of 12 months and 36 months, tricycles for the race will be provided. Some helmets will be provided, however it is encouraged that participants bring their helmets.




9 am: Clothing and Household Items Give-a-way @ Lakeside Community Center

SPAR Lakeside Community Center will host a community clothing and household items giveaway. This event is designed to help those in need during these trying times. Participants should bring up to two bags for their selected items. The LCC is located at 2200 Milam St.




9 am: Therapeutic Adaptive "Fit for lIfe" Field Day @ A.C. Steere Elementary School

Presented by the SPAR Therapeutic Division, there will be track and field events, relay races, LA Chip booth, space walks, hot dogs and more. Ribbons will be awarded. AC Steers is located at 4002 Grover Place in Shreveport



10 am: Drill Team Workshop @ Bill Cockrell Community Center

SPAR and Galilee Baptist Church will a drill team workshop to identify youth organizations that are interested in organizing a drill team or improving drill team skills. Area youth organizations, drill teams, churches, schools, community dance teams, drum lines, and choirs are encouraged to participate. The BCCC is located at 4109 Pines Road in West Shreveport. Registration is Required. Call (318) 671-8153 for more information.




12 pm: Singing For Life Blood Drive @ Louisiana Boardwalk

LifeShare blood drive with musical performances by the Barbershop Harmony Society, River Cities Jubilee Chorus, C. E. Byrd High School Choir, Sweet Harmony, and River Breeze.





8 pm: Mother's Day Crawfish Boil @ Bijou (formerly McArthur's Steakhouse)

All you can eat crawfish, complimentary beverages and wine, and door prizes. Tickets may be purchased at Boss Man's Barber World, Tight Edge Barber Shop, and M & M. Cost: $10, in advance. Admission can also be paid at the door.
